Can I wear a bikini with a tummy tuck scar?
The short answer is yes… but
Similar to any surgical procedure, a tummy tuck operation leaves a scar. And you may not know, that over the years the scar position has been influenced by the trends in fashion.
There are three main types of tummy tuck surgeries – standard, extended, and mini. Regardless of which tummy tuck variation you have, an incision is made within your bikini line. However, the incision’s exact shape and length will depend on the level of correction required to achieve the desired improvement.
It is important ti remember that since there is tension on the skin when the incision is closed, this scar occasionally migrates upward. That means that very low, skimpy swimwear may still show the incision even if you bring your swimwear in and the surgeon places there incision exactly where you want it. In addition, full tummy tucks ( not mini tummy tuck or C- section scar revision ) also have a scar around the belly button.
Some scars heal poorly. Although this can be due to poor surgical technique (but most plastic surgeons will take care of handling the tissue gently) , it can also be due to individual ability to heal scars. Silicine scar gels, laser, scar revision, and steroid injections can help, but some people just do not heal well. I always discuss that with my patients.
One of the best ways to feel more comfortable about the results from a tummy tuck is to look at before-and-after photos. As I do not disclose the photos of my patients on social media or my website, these can only be viewed during the consultation ( hence please don’t ask me to email them to you).
