Choosing the Most Natural Looking Breast Augmentation
For majority of my patients considering breast augmentation, the goal is simple:
to look natural — not “done.”
Achieving a natural result is not about choosing a specific implant alone. It’s the result of careful planning, proportion, and surgical judgement.
What does “natural” mean?
A natural-looking breast augmentation typically has:
- Soft, gradual contours
- Proportion to the patient’s body frame
- A natural slope in the upper breast (not overly full)
- Full lower pole of the breast
- Symmetry that still looks like a real body — not perfectly identical
The aim is for the result to blend with your body, not stand out from it.
Choosing the right implant size
One of the most important factors is implant size relative to your body. Larger implants are more likely to:
- Look less natural
- Feel heavier
- Stretch the tissues over time
A more natural result usually comes from choosing a size that is proportionate to your chest width, skin, and existing breast tissue
Suitable implant size is determined by breast dimensions, amount of breast tissue present and tissue laxity.
Determining the correct size of implant is one of the most crucial decisions to make. I guide my patients towards a range of possible implant sizes, but ultimately the size is my patient’s decision. If I feel that my patient has chosen an unsuitable implant, I will talk about this and explain why.
To confirm the choice of size, my patient is asked to perform a rice bag test at home after the first consultation. This gives a good indication of how the breast implants will look on the chest.
From these discussions, measurement and rice bag test, I recommend a range of implant sizes. This is routinely decided on at the time of the second outpatient meeting. Patients can try these implants in a soft bra, which will help narrow down the range. It is then usual for me to order several sizes of implants for the operation, one either side of the recommended size. This allows the final decision to be made during the operation, thus producing the best possible result.
Your existing anatomy matters
A natural result depends heavily on what you start with:
- Skin quality and elasticity
• Amount of natural breast tissue
• Chest wall shape
• Nipple position
Two patients with the same implant can have very different outcomes.
Implant Profile and Shape
Implants come in different profiles (how far they project forward). I purely use Motiva Ergonomix breast implants as I belive they give the most natural results.
Surgical technique and planning
I think the most important factor is the plastic surgeon’s judgement and this includes:
- Accurate measurements
- Careful implant selection
- Precise pocket creation
- Symmetry and balance
Natural results are rarely accidental — they are planned in detail.
The role of healing after breast augmentation
A natural look after breast augmentation doesn’t appear immediately. Early after surgery, implants may:
- Sit higher
- Feel firmer
- Look slightly less natural
Over time, they settle (“drop and fluff”), soften, and take on a more natural shape.
Common mistakes that lead to less natural results
- Choosing implants that are too large for the body
- Prioritising size over proportion
- Ignoring individual anatomy
- Expecting immediate final results
The most natural-looking breast augmentation is not defined by size — it’s defined by balance, proportion, and subtlety.
