Mastopexy

“In life, as in art, the beautiful moves in curves.” Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton

The purpose of a mastopexy or “breast uplift” is to make the breasts more shapely, firmer and better supported with a youthful and pert appearance whilst repositioning the nipple at its former height. Uplift surgery may also be combined with breast augmentation to restore the shape and the volume of the breast. This not only can improve a patient’s appearance by restoring her youthful, feminine proportions, but also help bras and swimsuits fit more comfortably and attractively.

Mastopexy is usually requested by women who have drooping of their breasts after weight loss, pregnancy or loss of skin elasticity with age or for those with asymmetrical breasts.

Mastopexy

Any plastic surgery procedure is a very personal choice and understandably there are a number of questions that arise. This information sheet is a general guide for patients considering mastopexy under the care of Dr Mackenzie. It should provide the answers to some questions that you may have.

Mastopexy introduction

Mastopexy is a cosmetic surgery performed by a plastic surgeon to remove extra loose skin from the breasts, and to lift and reshape them, to make them look more youthful and attractive.

Breasts naturally droop with age, after pregnancy, breastfeeding, and after weight loss. This is because the skin and fibrous ligaments in the breast become stretched so the breast tissue is not supported. It is not possible to recreate the fibrous support of the breasts, but they can be reshaped by removing excess skin, reshaping the breast tissue and moving the nipples up to the best position on the new breasts. Stretched, large areolae can also be reduced during breast lift surgery, creating an overall better proportioned, naturally looking breast.

After a breast uplift you may be more comfortable socially and personally. The best results are with women with small, saggy breasts, but breasts of any size can be lifted. The results of a breast uplift may not last as long with heavy breasts.

What is the goal of mastopexy?

Mastopexy is a surgical procedure designed to make the breasts more shapely, better supported and youthful. Other common goals of breast lift mastopexy include:

  • To restore a better breast shape following pregnancy & breastfeeding
  • Overall silhouette will be more balanced and attractive
  • To improve breast contour after significant weight loss
  • Stretched areolas and/or large nipples can be reduced during the same procedure
  • Swimsuits, sports bras, and form-fitting clothes will look and feel better
  • Breast lift is a procedure performed which does not significantly change the size of the breasts.  Breast implants may be required ( mastopexy augmentation )
